Iran launched “hundreds” of ballistic missiles in Israel’s direction Friday night, Iranian media including state broadcaster IRNA have reported.Social media footage showed Iranian ballistic missiles flying across the night sky in northern Israel, with Israeli air defense systems attempting to intercept them. Additional footage and images showed what appear to be direct hits on the city of Tel Aviv, with missiles apparently overwhelming Israel’s sophisticated air defense shield. Haifa was also targeted. The IRGC is calling the retaliatory strikes True Promise III, styled after previous missile and drone strikes on Israel in 2024 following attacks on its embassy in Syria, and assassinations of IRGC and anti-Israel resistance leaders. The IDF confirmed that it had detected missile launches from Iran, and said air defenses were deployed and working to counter the attack. The military later estimated that some 150 missiles had been fired in two barrages, and reported nine impact sites and multiple injuries.Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz accused Iran of “crossing red lines” attacking “civilian population concentrations,” and threatened to make Iran pay “a very heavy price for its heinous actions.”The retaliatory strikes on Israel followed warnings from Supreme Leader Khamenei, Iran’s president and the newly appointed IRGC chief earlier in the day vowing to make Israel pay for its overnight attacks, which injured over 300 people and killed close to 80, most of them civilians.Israel continued its attacks inside Iran through the day Friday. On Friday evening, Tasnim reported that Iran had destroyed two Israeli F-16 jets and several drones, and that the female pilot of one of the warplanes had been captured. Israel denied the claims.
