His statement alleging a “wholesale attack on democracy in India” triggered sharp reactions from the ruling BJP, which accused him of tarnishing the country’s image on foreign soil.
Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks in Colombia
Speaking to students and faculty at the Colombian university, Rahul Gandhi alleged that:
- India is facing a systematic “attack on democratic institutions.”
- Policies such as demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have weakened small and medium-sized businesses.
- The ideology of the RSS-BJP is rooted in cowardice, which he claimed is leading to a climate of fear in the country.
His comments were part of a larger lecture on global democracy, but they quickly gained traction in Indian political circles.
BJP’s Strong Rebuttal
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly condemned Gandhi’s remarks.
- Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP, labeled Rahul Gandhi as a “leader of propaganda” and demanded the confiscation of his diplomatic passport.
- BJP leaders further claimed that his statements were “baseless” and amounted to “defaming India on foreign platforms.”
The controversy adds to a series of past incidents where Rahul Gandhi’s overseas speeches—whether in the U.S., U.K., or now Colombia—have drawn accusations of internationalizing domestic politics.
