  • Declining UK Presence at CES Sparks Concerns Over Tech Industry Support | The Daily Canvas


    The UK’s presence at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has notably declined in recent years. Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organizes CES, expressed concerns over this trend, stating that the UK no longer provides the same level of support as other countries. He remarked, “It’s kind of crazy, it doesn’t make any sense, I can’t explain it.”

    In 2019, the UK organized a delegation of more than 100 British companies to attend CES, led by then International Trade Secretary Liam Fox. The government anticipated “millions of pounds’ worth of deals” during the conference, and eight UK companies received innovation awards.

    In contrast, the 2025 event features only 41 UK companies, including Etc, the incubation arm of the BT Group, female technology firm Elvie, and precise location company what3words.

    Shapiro highlighted that other European nations, such as France, the Netherlands, and even Ukraine, have a more substantial presence at CES. For instance, France is sending 110 startups to the 2025 event, focusing on sectors like healthcare, green technology, and mobility, all viewed through the lens of artificial intelligence.

    Despite the reduced government support, UK-based tech association techUK will attend CES 2025 to support British companies, aiming to connect them with public procurement opportunities, potential partnerships, and new investors.

    The UK government’s decreased engagement at CES raises questions about its commitment to promoting the nation’s tech sector on a global stage, especially when compared to the proactive involvement of other countries.
